Join the Academy of Science Communication 2026-2027

The Academy of Science Communication is offering 24 spots to scientific researchers in Denmark for a new course starting in October 2026.

The Academy of Science Communication provides intensive training courses for selected, academically strong scientific research profiles who wish to improve their communication skills and actively contribute their knowledge to public discourse.

Courses are held at the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, where participants are equipped within an interdisciplinary framework to engage effectively with the media and interact with the public across various digital platforms, at events, lectures, and more.

The goal is to encourage more researchers in Denmark to actively and competently share their knowledge with the wider public – not only to contribute to public debate and build support for scientific research, but also to foster a deeper understanding of how science works.

Course content

Time and place

During the course, you will meet some of Denmark’s most skilled journalists and communication professionals, who will teach and provide individual feedback on everything from public talks to social media posts.

Over the span of seven full course days, supplemented by short online sessions, you and the other participants will work with various formats such as articles, videos, presentations, social media, and media relations.

You will also develop a strategy for how science communication can fit into a busy scientific research career. Between sessions, you’ll complete practical exercises with personalized feedback. Whenever possible, these exercises will result in concrete communication products such as articles, talks, videos, social media posts, and more.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will continue as a member of our alumni network. As part of this network, you’ll have opportunities to visit media outlets and participate in public engagement activities, such as the Danish Folkemøde.

Admission criteria and expectations

The Academy of Science Communication is free of charge and open to scientific researchers from all scientific disciplines. Courses are conducted in English, and we prioritize applicants whose native language isn’t Danish.

Note: If you would like to be notified when applications open, you can sign up for our science communication newsletter here.

To apply, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You should hold a position at the level of Assistant Professor or higher, with a solid research background. Experience with research-based teaching or similar is also desirable. (See below for possible exceptions to the employment requirement.)
  • You must be passionate about science and envision a future within the research community.
  • You may be employed at a university, a private research company, or a communication institution such as a museum. Membership in the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters is not required.
  • You should have some initial experience with science communication.
  • You must be motivated to engage in dialogue with the public.

In addition, we expect you to actively participate in all aspects of the Academy – not only during the course days, but also in preparation and in the practical communication activities throughout the program.

You should only apply if you are genuinely committed and able to invest both your time and energy in the project. We also expect that, as an alumnus, you will continue to engage in the Academy’s activities in the years to come and act as an ambassador for science communication within your research environment.

In return, we offer what is likely the most comprehensive training in scientific research communication in Denmark, along with access to a unique network of skilled science communicators.

Note: It is possible to apply as a postdoc if you have a particularly strong scientific research profile and extensive experience, and if you are likely to contribute actively to science communication in Denmark through a future scientific research position. This option is most relevant in fields where permanent positions such as Assistant Professor or tenure-track roles are relatively difficult to obtain. All else being equal, and within the same discipline, researchers in permanent positions will be prioritized over postdocs.

Application

We open for applications in March 2026.

A unique and proven offering

With its long and intensive format, the Academy of Science Communication is a unique, high-quality program offered exclusively by the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters in Denmark.

Participants report high satisfaction with the courses and describe gaining several valuable outcomes for their future careers in scientific research: general knowledge about communication and media, practical tools, a network of fellow communicators, and a strategy for their future outreach efforts.

Concrete evaluation results show that, after completing the course, participants feel more confident in communicating scientific research across platforms and media, and they more frequently share their knowledge with the public than they did before joining the program.

The Academy of Science Communication’s courses are supported by the Carlsberg Foundation and the Novo Nordisk Foundation.
